Anouk’s dramatic Faraday dress

AnoukFaraday1

Lighting does strike twice, or even more times when you are the shortest conductive path to ground, as Anouk Wippert dramatically demonstrated wearing her metal dress. at the recent Maker Faire Bay Area. Wearing a base-layer of chain mail Anouk designed a dress made of segmented metal sheets, together with a striking helmet and two plasma balls mounted on the shoulder. The physical principle is that lighting cannot penetrate a conducting surface, however, it is one thing to know the physics and another to put it to the test with lighting strikes emerging from a giant Van der Graaf generator.

The following video shows the outfit being tested with what still looks like a fearsome handheld lighting generator.

I have to say I’m a might envious, who wouldn’t want to act like a super hero – lighting girl in this case!-)

Here we can see the custom metal segments held together with chain links. I’m curious to know what this weighted.
