Dava Newman of MIT presented a smart sleeve at the recent MARS (Machine learning, Automation, Robotics, and Space) conference. The knitted sleeve was part of a broader concept of a 3D knitted suit for long-term space travel. To show the technical possibilities multi-disciplinary team created a 3D knitted sleeve with constant compression and an integrated a set of sensors including what seems to be 6 DOF (acc, gyro) measurements. There is a nice video showing aspects of the sleeve if you follow the MIT media lab link.
